Hangovers! Oh that dreaded word that ruins our day after the nights of fun and revelry. How we all hate it, isn’t it? It kind of makes you question the sanity of indulging in your favourite cocktails a tad bit more than you should have. Well, before we delve any further, let me tell you about an experience. Recently I and a few of my friends flew down to Bangalore to celebrate one of our friend’s birthday. We had heard so much about the city’s nightlife that over the weekend we were there, we decided to explore the best bars in Bangalore. Our friend who is quite in the know also took us along to some of the best breweries in Bangalore. And as you can imagine, we all had a terrible hangover the next day.
But, hey certain special occasions do warrant the kind of fun we all had drinking and eating in the best restro bars in Bangalore. If you are also lamenting after a fun outing like us friends, fret not. We bring to you 8 natural hangover home remedies that you didn’t know about.
Water: This is the first and simplest step. Alcohol being a diuretic tends to dehydrate the body. Drinking water before, during and after your drinking sessions can really help. One good rule of thumb is to drink one glass of water for every equivalent alcohol serving you take. IF you forget to drink water before or during your alcohol consumption, make sure to have at least 3-4 glasses right before going to bed.
Coconut water: After drinking the level of electrolytes and antioxidants in our bodies go down making us feel awful and causing terrible hangovers. Coconut water has unique hydration properties as well as high electrolyte concentrations and thus is a very helpful hangover remedy.
Bananas: The humble banana, which can be found in most Indian homes at all times , is a very effective way to combat the nasty hangover. Excessive alcohol intake eliminates potassium from the body. Bananas being very rich in potassium can fill back this essential mineral quickly and cheaply. A banana shake with some honey can do wonders for helping you cope.
Honey: The natural fructose in honey helps in metabolizing the alcohol. Also it is rich in potassium and antioxidants and thus a good hangover remedy. IT can be had as it is or put on toast in breakfast for a quick remedy.
Tomato juice: It provides the much needed boost of minerals and vitamins to the body which the alcohol depletes. The fructose in tomatoes also helps flush out the alcohol from the system.
Ginger: Oftentimes a hangover is accompanied by a queasy feeling in the stomach. A ginger is the best remedy for such times. You can chew on fresh or candied ginger. Also mixing a bit of ginger to a honey and lemon drink works wonders.
Peppermint oil: A common symptom of hangovers is the splitting headache that accompanies it. Peppermint oil is your friend for its headache-fighting powers. It can regulate blood vessel dilation and hence helps with headaches. You can rub it on your temples for easy relief.
Eggs: While you maybe in no mood to eat with a bad hangover; a good egg breakfast can be a saviour. Eggs (more specifically the yolk) contain amino acid cysteine, which helps in breaking down and flushing out the toxin acetaldehyde (which is generated from alcohol)
So our final word is to drink responsibly always, but if you still find yourself beset with a hangover, these remedies will definitely come to your rescue.
